MEET THE SOUTH INDIAN SUPERSTAR

The terminology superstar is so synonymous with Rajinikanth, it's impossible to picture anybody in his shoes when you tend to use that for any other actor in the Indian film industry. Rajini reiterated his nation wide popularity recently (well, not too recently but still!) with the smash hit Endhiran. So when comparisons arise, it's obvious you tend to be careful lest you invite the wrath of millions of die-hard superstar fans from around the globe. All that apart, going by the current trade results, Vijay can undoubtedly be called as the superstar of south India.

More than an actor's commercial value and the promising statistical data of his films making business, it's important to gauge his popularity by counting his fans. Firstly, Vijay's fan base is on an ever expanding spree and he has found a strong hold among fans not only in Tamil Nadu but also in parts of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Tamil Nadu, obviously is the strongest among the lot and Vijay has a strong presence in the cyberspace with an enviable representation of his brand among his net savvy fans. There are hundreds of blogs and forums that discuss and closely followed by his ardent fans. Not to mention, he has numerous Facebook pages and even websites dedicated to news on him.

It's a fact that Vijay's films enjoy success in Kerala. Strangely, for a state that is averse of hero worshiping, Kerala has emerged as Vijay's biggest fan base outside Tamil Nadu. His films are sold at enviable rates in Kerala and make profits. Even a film like Bodyguard, that was originally made in Malayalam, enjoyed good business in the state. Close on the heels of Kerala, Andhra is emerging as a strong fan base for Vijay. His movies, dubbed and released in Telugu, are as successful as some original Telugu ones.

Snehithudu, the Telugu dubbing of Nanban, is making business like crazy in the lands of Tollywood. It's also reported that Snehithudu has even surpassed the business made by Mahesh Babu's latest super hit Businessman. And Mahesh Babu is considered to be one of the commercially viable actors in the Telugu industry that makes generally good business throughout the year.

Nanban's business has been seen as a clincher for Vijay's commercial status. Nanban not only received the best opening, it reportedly received the second biggest opening for a Tamil film so far, but it gained positive reviews as well as commercial success. Made at a budget of 60 crores, Nanban has already garnered enough money with its phenomenal advance booking. All the money it makes now is profit and it's running to packed houses in all the theatres, in which it was released.

It has also been a good year beginning for Vijay, after a fairly successful 2010. Two of his movies appeared in the top 10 best grossers in the year 2010 - Kaavalan and Velayutham. Nanban is all set to lead the same countdown this year. Vijay's year ahead is also looking promising with movies directed by renowned directors including A R Murugadoss (Thuppakki) and Gautham Menon (Yohan: Adhyayam Ondru) in the pipeline. The success of these movies will also seal the deal and make him on of the biggest superstars of South India

VIJAY'S THUPPAKI GRABBED

One of the most awaited films of the year is Thuppaki starring Vijay and directed by AR Murugadoss. Vijay has been on a winning streak in recent times and Nanban has further consolidated his position as one of the leading stars in the industry. Consequently, there is a huge buzz surrounding Thuppaki as Murugadoss is also on a high, career - wise after 7aum Arivu.
Gemini Film Circuits have bought Thuppaki for an astronomical figure and they are very happy with their acquisition. The makers feel that it is a sure draw at the box office and that the script is such that Vijay with his repertoire of skills will be showcased perfectly.

FAST AGAINST NANBAN

Nanban is in trouble once again with the Most Backward Classes Association sending a notice to the Producers’ Council Chairman SA Chandrasekar, director Shankar and the Censor Board seeking deletion of the words Aandi and Pandaram.
In the notice, it has been stated that Aandi and Pandaram community belong to the Most Backward Classes. It is hurting to hear dialogues about these communities in the film. Further, they have also sought the deletion of the words Paari, Poori, Kakoose Sorry.
It has been furthered that the community members will go on a fast until the offending words are deleted.

"THALAIVA YOU ARE GREAT", SAYS VIJAY'S SON

Guess what was the reaction of Sanjay, son of Vijay, after watching his father in 'Nanban'? "Sanjay thoroughly enjoyed the movie and when I got back home, he pulled down his pants and said 'Thalaiva nee great", says Vijay.
"I didn't expect such a reaction from Sanjay. I could not control myself after seeing him pulling his pants down and uttering the line. I was laughing for a long time," says the Ilayathalapathy, who is on cloud nine.
Meanwhile, sources have it that family members of Jiiva and Srikanth have also watched 'Nanban' and were all smiles about the movie. "This shows that the film is a clean family entertainer which could be enjoyed by one and all," they add.
Produced by Gemini Film Circuit and directed by Shankar, 'Nanban' a remake of Bollywood blockbuster '3 Idiots' hit the screens Thursday last. Since then, it is witnessing full-house shows in theatres all over Tamil Nadu.

AKON TO SMACK IT IN VIJAY'S THUPPAKI?

'Thupaki' is indeed becoming bigger with each passing day what with all the big names associated with the film. The latest is that international artist Akon of 'Smack that...' fame will venture into Tamil cinema by crooning a number in Ilayathalapathy Vijay's 'Thupaki'! His earlier offering, 'Chammak Challo...' for SRK's 'Ra.One' set a rage in our country.
It's almost official that Akon will be singing one song in this album and it is said that it will be recorded shortly in Chennai following which the makers will announce it. The makers are keen on making this single track a super hit and want to market it aggressively post the release of the music album of 'Thupaki'.
The film will be an action loaded entertainer and has Kajal Aggarwal as the lead lady. It already has big names associated with it for the cast and crew and roping in Akon for a track is only going to make 'Thupaki' bigger than ever!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THALAPATHY

Vijay is undoubtedly the ‘Entertainment Rocket’ of Kodambakkam. He became a ‘Nanban’ for the sake of Shankar and now he has become a ‘Thotta’ from ‘Thuppaki’ (Bullet from Gun) for A.R. Murugadoss. The film’s shooting is progressing rapidly at the locales of Mumbai.

How was your working experience with Shankar?

Shankar is such a versatile director. Not only a filmmaker, but a brilliant person, w...
ho has sound knowledge about everything. Any topic under the sun and he is ready to give extraordinary facts. He makes sure that he knows everything that happens in the world, though it’s not a part of his film career. I would say, he is the Spielberg of India.

Will you continue to act in multi-starrer movies in future like Nanban?

Surely, if there is a good script with good characterizations, I would go for it as it is a healthy thing. When I was shooting for the film ‘Velayudham’, actor Jeyam Ravi gave more tips to Raja for portraying me as a mass hero. Well, even he’s a hero and showing such interests is really wonderful.

Have you excelled Aamir Khan’s performance in Nanban?

It’s not a good thing to compare him with me. He is at a different position and I have done the film in my style. Even, those who have watched the original version will find this one to be a new one.

Will you work with Shankar again?

Why not? If everything works out well, we will surely come together again. He had asked me to do ‘Mudhalvan’ before years, but I missed the opportunity. This is the main reason, I didn’t want to happen again and immediately accepted Nanban.

How about ‘Thuppakki’?

Surely, it will be a big treat for my fans and will show a different and new Vijay for you all. I am Thotta in this Thuppakki. For now, this is enough.

THUPPAKI FIRST LOOK ON FEBRUARY 1st!

Ilayathalapathy Vijay are celebrating their idol’s grandeur victory with Shankar’s Nanban . As we speak , works are on full swing to unveil the first look of A.R.Murugadoss ‘s Thuppaki which will feature Vijay in a new avatar.

THUPPAKI ” start rolling in Chennai from next week. It has Vijay and Kajal Agarwal in the lead.

According to the insider report , the first look will be unveiled...
on February 1st which will be loved by every section.

It is said that Vijay will play the role of a military officer while Sathyan who brought the roof down in Nanban will do the role of a friend. The crew has completed 35 days of schedule in mumbai and will join once again very soon.

Santosh Sivan is the cameraman and Harris Jayaraj will provide music.

Producer of this film, Kalaipuli S Dhanu said: “Thupakki is confirmed as the title in Tamil and it has tremendous title value and we have registered the title. The other details regarding the cast and crew will be announced officially early next week.”

Interestingly, the movie is reported to be a quickie and the crew is working in day and night that will make Thuppaki hit the screens for this April.

VIJAY'S TIMELY HELP

Vijay’s timely help has been much appreciated by the people in Cuddalore district. The star was at Kammiyampettai in Cuddalore to distribute five kilos of rice to the Thane cyclone affected people. Cuddalore was the worst affected area in the recent floods and Vijay decided to help these people out by rendering some assistance.
His Makkal Mandram administrators arranged for a function at Cuddalore recently where the star distributed rice bags to the beneficiaries. The area in which the function happened wore a festive look with thousands of people gathering to catch a glimpse of their favorite star.
The beneficiaries thanked Vijay for the timely help.

VIJAY TV BUYS NANBAN

It’s almost like a revolution happening down here in small screens. The usual scenario of the satellite rights of big tickets being sold to leading channels with a political connection seems to have changed now. Vijay TV has been striking at its best and has had a gradual growth gaining good TRPs. The innovative shows both in aspects of fiction and non-fiction turned to become the major attraction.

Apparently, the star network started buying satellite rights of big tickets that were once piece of chocolate for the other leading channels.

Having bagged the big movies of all times, Vijay TV has now acquired the rights of Shankar’s ‘Nanban’ starring Vijay, Ileana, Srikanth, Jeeva and Sathyaraj in lead roles.

KFC COMPLETED 11500 VISITORS!

MY WIFE SANGEETHA MOTIVATED ME - VIJAY

He sure knows what works for him. Riding high after the Nanban glory, Vijay opens up on his backbone - his wife Sangeetha, working with Shankar and future projects

“I have heard that every woman is reborn after delivering a child and going through labor pain. I experienced it literally though it was only through acting for the film Nanban. I salute all the `mothers' in the world,“ remarked actor Vijay, after he went through the heartwrenching experience of performing in a childbirth scene for his recent hit Nanban.

Congratulatory messages have been pouring in from industry people and friends -not only for his fresh and energetic looks, but also for the way he has relived his college days. “Thanks to my wife Sangeetha, who motivated me and insisted that I reprise Aamir Khan's role in the Tamil remake of 3 Idiots,“ he says, at the start of his freewheeling exclusive interview with DC.
Everyone feels that you were able to convincingly fit into the role of a college student. Comment.

(Laughs) Shankar was right there to bring alive the character with the exact facial expressions! Honestly, I didn't expect the remake to come to me in the first place! I did have initial apprehensions about whether I would suit the role at all, but Geetha gave me a lot of courage which made me accept it. And because it came from a maverick director like Shankar, I did not want to let it go. At any point of time, were you intimidated that the audienc would compare your perfor mance with Aamir's ? I had watched 3 Idiots thrice. So, I studiously avoided Aamir's style and infused a certain body language of my own that worked eventually. But of course, there were a few cute expressions of Aamir's that I liked and followed exactly! How was it working with Shankar? He is the best director I have ever worked with. I should call it a super chance. There used to be a lot of clarity and perfect planning. More than a great filmmaker, Shankar sir is a humble human being.

Tell us about your bonding with Jiiva and Srikanth.

Jiiva is a lively person and always cracks jokes on the sets. I guess that got translated on to the screen as well.

Are you open to multistarrers in future?

Why not? It all depends on the script, irrespective of other aspects.

Which is the most unforgettable compliment you received after Nanban's release?

On the first day of its release, Shankar wanted me to join him for some promos in the city . I reached home late at night and as I stepped out of my car, my son Sanjay came running up to me, pulled down his pants and said, `Daddy you are great'. For a moment, I was perplexed and was left wondering about how the film has influenced and reached even children.

About teaming up with new age directors like Shankar, Murugadoss and Gautham Menon...

I don't plan for it. It just happens. Frankly speaking, such scripts are coming my way only now.

How is Thuppakki with Murugadoss shaping up?

So far, so good! We had a 35day shooting schedule at Mumbai. It was predominantly on the roads and in some of the houses near the Sealink.
Everywhere we went, hundreds of people gathered to watch the shooting.

But the production house Gemini Film Circuit has stepped in to make sure there's an end to this and are doing their best to stop the pirated versions of the film from going viral. You can help them as well by writing to copyright@gemini360.in and report these links and they'll make sure it's removed.

VIJAY - ILEANA LIP LOCK IN NANBAN SURPRISES FANS

Vijay and Ileana D'Cruz's passionate lip lock in Nanban has become the talk of the town. The audience, who were not aware of the kissing scene, were surprised to see the Kaavalan star sharing the smooch in the recently released Tamil movie.

While Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor shared as many as three lip-locks in 3 Idiots, the original version of Nanban, in the Tamil film, Vijay-Ileana have featured in one kissing sequence. Director Shankar has kept it as a surprising element in the climax of the Kollywood movie. However, it lasts for 50 seconds. As a result, their chemistry have worked big time in the movie.

This is probably for the second time Vijay has done the kissing scene. The 37-year-old shared his first on-screen smooch with Jyothika in blockbuster movie Khushi.

However, Nanban directed by Shankar also stars Jeeva, Srikanth, and Sathyraraj in the important roles. The movie released on January 12 is doing good business at the Tamil Box Office.

WHAT'S WORKING FOR SHANKAR'S NANBAN

Shankar's Nanban has driven the audience crazy. The Tamil version of Bollywood blockbuster 3 Idiots has taken Vijay's fans by storm thereby running into packed theaters all across Tamil Nadu. Thanks to the wonderful content, which is pulling the audience from all age groups.

Traders claim that Nanban has all the ingredients, which the audience love to watch on-screen. The only factor missing in the movie is action-sequence part. However, the audience seems to have not bothered about it and they love the Tamil film as it is.

An excited fan named Algated on our review expressed his view on Nanban. He wrote, “Kudos to Shankar for three reasons. First, coming forward to make a remake film breaking his macho image. Second, his eagerness to see the movie with good messages reach Tamil audiences. Third, by bringing up a combination of multiple heros in single movies, setting up a new trend in Tamil movies.”

Nanban mainly works for the lively subject. Though, it looked like the movie would only attract urbanites and youths, it managed to pull the mass and the family audience to theatres. Another fan named Raja says that the movie is a complete entertainer.

He writes, “Nanban is a fun ride. The movie is a complete package of entertainment. Good comedies, songs, and message make the movie worth a watch. It may be frame-to-frame copy from 3 Idiots but Shankar has ensured to add Tamil essence in the movie.”

Shankar directorial movie also stars Ileana D'Cruz, Jeeva, Srikanth and Sathyaraj in the important roles.

NANBAN CELEBRATING FRIENDSHIP

Gutsy is the epithet that comes to mind when you think of director Shankar. And the best part is his experiments pay off. Like Nanban (U) has. Taking up a blockbuster of all time for a remake, that too within a couple of years of its release, and having Vijay, an action hero, replicate a performance-backed role with not a single stunt sequence, are bold decisions. But the result is an enjoyable cocktail of humour with some sentiment and sadness thrown in for that extra appeal.
In a career spanning almost a couple of decades, Vijay has changed tack probably half a dozen times. You're glad he's done it again. The hero wins with grey matter, not muscle power. No intro song, no high altitude action gimmicks — welcome Nanban Vijay with open arms! It is a compliment to him that he doesn't remind you of Aamir Khan in Three Idiots — it's an original, underplayed, effective essay. Way to go Vijay!
Predominantly a campus story that goes back and forth in time, Nanban celebrates friendship in a way that will remain with you for long. Nanban is a story of three friends at a prestigious engineering college — one supposedly wealthy, the other middle-class and the third below poverty line. With Vijay as the pivot, the story takes off from the present (a decade after their graduation), goes back to their college days of caring and sharing, traumas and challenges, and again lands in the present to joyously proclaim ‘Aal eez vell'!
Not just Vijay, even the choice of Srikanth (similar to Madhavan's in TI) is a surprise. So are his expressions and voice modulation that have improved by leaps and bounds. Srikanth has worked hard on the college boy look and it has reaped dividends. As for Jiiva, you give him characters with scope and he delivers. Both Srikanth and Jiiva get opportunities to prove their mettle, and they do. As for Ileana, it's her hourglass figure and perfect curves that catch your attention. Little else seems to matter! But you had her looking more youthful and ravishing in her Tamil debut Kaedi, some years ago — only that it sank without a trace. Her sister Anuya's cheerful laughter in front of the groom's party and her shocked father, as the bride runs away, is absolutely confounding! Did the director notice it at all?
Playing the qualified nincompoop is Sathyan. If as Chatur Ramalingam (as always in Hindi cinema the South Indian is a joker, you see!), Omi Vaidya irritated you, Sathyan as Srivatsan is no better. It's sad that though there's a lesson to be learnt from Srivatsan's attitude, the concentration is more on toilet comedy as far as this caricature is concerned. Surely Shankar could have done something about it. Satyaraj is the right choice and he proves it, but you cannot help comparing him with Boman Irani, who tweaked the character to evoke a smile in the initial sequences of TI. Is it S.J. Suryah in that miniscule part played by Javed Jaffrey in the original? But why?
Where did both Rajkumar Hirani and Shankar get those odd names for the heroes? Ranchodas Shamaldas Chanchad is Panchavan Paarivendhan in Tamil. Later the names get weirder — Phunsukh Wangdu in Hindi becomes Kosaksi Posapugazh here!
The scientific mind and linguistic skills keep Karky looking for innovations in lyrics too. ‘Aska Laska,' said to have 16 languages in it, is one such. Scintillatingly tuned (Harris Jeyaraj) and lavishly filmed, the sequence should be a sell-out! In fact, all of Harris' songs in Nanban are catchy.
Roping in Karky as co-dialogue writer is an intelligent move. The Anniyan duet had rows of lorries graffitied in striking hues, while in Nanban it is an entire train that's been painted bright! Art director Muthuraj could have thought better. Otherwise the grandeur of Shankar's sets is intact!
With more than three hours of running time, Nanban is a lengthy film. Yet, but for the second duet which appears redundant, the screenplay sails smoothly.
Once again Shankar proves the master craftsman that he is. And for the Nanban team, it's a year well-begun!
Nanban
Genre: Humour
Director: Shankar
Cast: Vijay, Srikanth, Jiiva, Ileana, Sathyaraj, Sathyan
Storyline: Three friends, their separation and reunion …
Bottomline: An engaging trio!

NANBAN GETS EXEMPTION FROM ENTERTAINMENT TAX

Shankar-directed Nanban, to be released as Snehithudu in Telugu later this month, has been exempted from paying the mandatory entertainment tax by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Why, you ask? For faithfully sticking to the Tamil culture, and, of course, for meeting the U-rating criterion.

'Nanban' that came with a clean 'U' and saw a big worldwide release just a couple of days back is the first film to be exempted from entertainment tax as per the new scheme by the AIADMK rule in TN.

The Tamil Nadu government has a 22 member panel with members from various fields within the film industry who recommend movies for this tax exemption, the key criteria being the film should have a 'U' certificate from the censor board and stick to Tamil culture.

'Nanban', a faithful remake of Bollywood blockbuster '3 Idiots' boasts off a huge star cast including Vijay, Jiiva, Srikanth, Ileana, Sathyaraj and Sathyan and has seen a big opening. And now that 'Nanban' is exempted from this 30% entertainment tax it is sure to increase the film's box-office collections!

NANBAN TAKES A GREAT OPENING

Shankar has hit the bull`s eye once again with Nanban, and has every reason to smile. The prints were taken for pooja to the temple in a chariot by Vijay fans and later the actor`s dad SA Chandrasekhar took part in the function. Later the entire Nanban team watched the first show at Sathyam Cinemas on Thursday morning.
It was fan frenzy, as traffic came to a standstill and everyone wanted to get a glimpse of Ilayathalapathy Vijay who hardly comes to a theatre for the first-day first-show of his film. His wife Sangeetha who also watched the film went up to her husband and hugged him.
Replying to questions by the media, Shankar praised the performance of his lead actors Vijay, Jiiva and Srikant and their dedication and co-operation in this multi-starrer. Looks like there maybe more reasons to smile for the talented director in days to come as the movie is sure to turn into a blockbuster as the film took a 100 percent opening worldwide.

NANBAN BOX OFFICE COLLECTION REPORTS

In Nanban Vijay has shed his hero image and live a as Character which is well appreciated by all film critics and his fans. But the truth is by shedding his hero image Vijay has become the real hero in the movie by living the character Panchavan Parivendan.

3 - IDIOTS STAR PRAISES NANBAN

Sharman Joshi, who had acted in 3 Idiots, wished the Nanban team all success. The star said that he happened to watch the special screening of Nanban recently and was thoroughly pleased with the way director Shankar had handled the script. Sharman also had some good words for Vijay, Jiiva and Srikanth, who had acted in Nanban. It may be mentioned here that Nanban is a remake of the Hindi film 3 Idiots which is based on the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat.
The film opened to packed houses this morning and movie buffs are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the reviews.

SRIKANTH SAYS VIJAY IS HARD WORKER

Srikanth, who plays one of the lead roles in Nanban, recalls his experiences working in the film and his co-star Vijay. The actor says that Vijay is basically a very quiet person but when it comes to facing the camera he transforms totally and fits into the skin of the character.
Srikanth adds that Vijay is a hard worker who did his homework perfectly well for every scene that was shot. His experience working with the mass hero was something that Srikanth will never forget.

NANBAN MOVIE REVIEW

Review by :  KURUVI FANS CLUB

Starring: Vijay , Jiiva, Ileana, Sathyaraj, Srikanth
Direction: Shankar
Music: Harris Jeyaraj
Production: Gemini Film Circuit

The official remake of the blockbuster Three Idiots is here! We wondered, when lesser blockbusters were being remade, why this cracker of a story was not finding its way down south. But, all good things take some time in the making and it is somehow fitting that a tale loved by most part of the nation, first in the form of Chetan Bhagath’s ‘Five Point Someone’ and then in the form of Rajkumar Hiran’s Three Idiots, is brought down south by Shankar, the man with the Midas touch.
Well, there are very few people who might not yet know the basic premise of the movie; thanks mostly to the overwhelming success of the book and the original movie. Its about three friends, the four years they spend in college with one of them trying to be a free bird in a system that clips wings, their run ins with a draconian educationist, a cute romance angle and a secret. Well, that’s a lot on the plate of a single movie, you might think. But, the script is one masterpiece, originally by Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinodh Chopra, as it brings together all these elements into a fun filled, hilarious, touching, meaningful and immensely entertaining three hours. You get everything that you would want to from a college movie; the camaraderie that you cherish forever, the pressure of academics, marks, the fun and even the geeks and nerds. Nanban is not a full length comedy, but there are numerous instances which will make your belly ache with laughter (the ‘karpazhippu’ scene is an absolute scream); neither is Nanban a love story, but it does have a very likeable romance; Nanban is also not a social statement, but it does point out some gaping holes in the educational system. Well then, what is Nanban? Well, it is a complete package for those who love good, clean, sensible entertainment (that means all of us!).
Nanban marks the return of Shankar to a youth oriented film after Boys, that was eight years back. It also marks the return of Vijay to a completely youth centric college goer role. And boy, haven’t they gone all out to make it a success. We don’t see Vijay in the movie, it is only Panchavan Parivendhar! He has given himself completely to the role, surrendering to the demands of the script. For an actor who has played the ‘carefree guy who loathes books’ stereotype almost all his career, this is one role that offers a diametric opposite. Vijay takes it on and proves his versatility. The years have not dimmed his boyish charm and energy, you don’t doubt for a second whether he is a college student; an almost perfect performance. Jiiva brings in his own charms to the movie, as the God fearing guy who just wants to get through college and start earning but is far too apprehensive and distracted. We have seen his comic timing before; he uses it beautifully here too, and scores with the sentiments as well. You just have to watch him start the ‘induction motor’! Srikanth, the dark horse! Well, he holds up well with the more seasoned performers and when he gets a chance, he proves his mettle in the quite emotional scene with his father. A very well balanced act!
What can we say about Ileana? Where was she for almost 5 years after Kedi? Never mind, because she is back with a bang. A very impressive performance which uses glamour only as an embellishment, not main item itself. She shows no difficulty with Tamil, displays quite a crackling chemistry with Vijay, emotes well and dances with élan. We could see more of her in Tamil cinema very soon. But, the big surprise packet of the whole affair is none other than Sathyaraj. As the hard nosed principal of an engineering college who wants to treat everyone as a machine, he excels and proves that class and experience is a combination that cannot be bogged down for long. His dialogue delivery is absolutely spot on. Sathyan gets a huge opportunity and doesn’t let it go as he makes the nerdy ‘Silencer’ memorable in Tamil too; he carries off the utterly important ‘karpazhippu’ scene perfectly. Hope he gets more fitting opportunities in the future. S.J.Suryah’s cameo is also good.
The best thing about Nanban is its casting! Shankar has put in a lot of thought and roped in just the right actors for each and every role. Even the smallest of characters seem to have been hand picked, the results show. Dialogues by Shankar and Madhan Karky are sharp, witty, funny and meaningful as different occasions demand. They have imported the meaning of the original Hindi lines without making the Tamil look artificial, a very deft job. Harris Jeyaraj brings in his musical touch, we enjoy ‘Asku Laska’. Manoj Paramahamsa makes every frame pleasing on the eye, the work in ‘Asku Laska’ is particularly good.
You really have to be a hard nosed person to find faults with this movie, much like Sathyaraj’s character. But, one could say that the crash course in child delivery atop a TT table is a bit difficult to believe! And, one also cannot understand a student of an engineering college in Tamil Nadu wearing a very north Indian sherwani for his college speech. Also, why is Virumandi Santhanam’s daughter’s marriage looking so much like a north Indian affair with turbans and all? Perhaps Shankar could have changed these from Three Idiots. But, again, these are minute flaws in an otherwise top class product.
Nanban has got more than something for everyone. It is very unlikely that a person finds such a wholesome package unsatisfying. Yes, Vijay does not show any heroism; he gives it all up for the integrity of the script. But, fans, don’t be disheartened, because what you get it lieu more than makes up for it. The only way you can detract from the achievement of this team is through the fact that the movie almost looks like a frame by frame remake of Three Idiots, especially in the first half. Do we need a creative genius like Shankar to give us a frame by frame remake? We see his signature only in the song picturisation. But, look at it this way. The original was so good that even a genius like Shankar hardly felt like making any changes. So, lets applaud Shankar for trusting the original and resisting the temptations to give his own touches. Also, let us not forget to applaud the makers of the original, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinodh Chopra, for building a script that would work anywhere in India. If you haven’t seen Three Idiots, Nanban will be an absolutely joyful experience.  And if you have seen it, still go for Nanban and relive the magic; it’s worth it.
Verdict: All is absolutely well!

Right as the year begins, seems like we are in for a treat with back to back big releases. Nanban, remake of the Bollywood blockbuster Three Idiots, is directed by Shankar and has no less than an ensemble star cast including Vijay, Jiiva and Srikanth. To call it the most expected movie of the year is naive, especially when the year has just started. But there's no denial to the fact that Nanban is riding high on expectations both from Vijay and Shankar fans. Not to mention, the movie's success in Hindi and Chetan Bhagat's best seller book's super success upon which it is based on.

Nanban is also Shankar's first remake. Shankar has always relied on his original stories and it's quite unusual for a director of his caliber to embark on a remake project. It is said that Shankar got the idea of remaking this movie after he watched it on DVD during the shoot breaks of his blockbuster film Endhiran. He fell in love with it immediately that he decided to remake it. He bought the rights and started the project soon after with Vijay, Jiiva and Srikanth in the lead.

This film also marks Ileana's reentry into Tamil. She has not been seen in the industry after her appearance in Kedi a few years ago although there are rumors every now and then about her possible Tamil project. Nanban's ensemble star cast also includes Sathyaraj, Anuya, S J Surya, Raghava Lawrence, Uma Padmanabhan and Manobala.

Nanban's music launch was held without much fanfare in an engineering college in Coimbatore. Sound track as well as teaser trailers of songs have been receiving positive responses ever since. The six songs Harris scored for the movie are not exactly replicas of the original versions but Harris has given his nice touch to each one of them thereby regionalising them.

Certified as U, without any cuts by the Censor Board, Nanban will be distributed by Gemini Film Circuit. Advance bookings have already begun and a Telugu version is also being released on January 26th.

SATHYARAJ'S INTERVIEW ABOUT NANBAN

Nanban is to hit the screens this week. Once the film is out, there will be several comparisons with the original.

But actor Sathyaraj, who has played a vital role in the film, views it differently.

He says, “There won't be any comparison from the audience side. Apart from Chennai, the audience for Hindi films is very small and has been diminishing since my college days. Sholay ran for 250 days in Coimbatore but 3 Idiots ran for just two weeks there. Those days, Amitabh and Rajesh Khanna impressed the Tamil audience.

After that period, Hindi films are not very popular with the rural audience. So those who have not seen the original will feel the fresh ness of the film. Nanban is incomparable.“ About his character he says, “I have not done such a role in my 200 films. The role was very challenging. I am very excited about the film's release.

LITTLE DELAY WITH NANBAN

Time for yet another Tamil movie to rule in Tollywood. The makers of ‘Nanban’ are sure as shooting stars with the Telugu version ‘Snehithudu’. As mentioned previously, the entire crew of ‘Nanban’ has a huge market there. To start off with Shankar, his movies dubbed in Telugu have been blockbusters followed by Vijay’s dubbed movies storming with success and so is with Jeeva, who’s ‘Rangam’ (Ko) successfully crossed 100 days. Ileana, the sweet hot babe of Tollywood has been wooing millions of fans there. And of course, Srikanth has a good market there playing prominent roles in many movies.

Gemini Film Circuit is vigorously promoting the film to a greater magnitude and the audio launch is expected to take place grandiosely in Hyderabad.

Harris Jayaraj’s Telugu songs including his direct release ‘Orange’ starring Ram Charan Teja and Genelia D’ Souza have been chartbusters.

The audio launch was supposed to happen on January 8 but has been now postponed to January 9 due to unknown reasons.

MADHAVAN KARKY ABOUT 'ASKKU LASKA'

Lyricist Madhan Karky often called the lyrics engineer has been flooded with congratulatory messages for the number Asku Laska in the film Nanban..

He was quoted saying, “I wrote the song by expressing the word ‘love’ in 16 languages (including Turkish, Slovak and Chinese). The concept was to make the song a bouquet of love. Director Shankar and I decided to go for this out-of-the-box idea to mak
e it stand out from other romantic songs.”
