NEW YEAR GIFT FOR ALL KURUVI FANS CLUB VIEWERS!

NANBAN UNSEEN STILL

VIJAY THE KING OF 2011!

He has been on a victory march in the past year. After a lull in 2010, Vijay bounced back with Kaavalan, a remake of the Malayalam hit, Bodyguard, in January 2011. The assortment of sentiment, romance and comedy went down well with viewers and Vijay was in the saddle once again. Then came Velayudham that re-instated him as an unassailable action hero. The two films helped him stay put at the top.

The year also saw international recognition come Vijay's way for the first time — Kaavalan was selected for screening in the Panorama section at the prestigious 14 Shanghai International Film Festival. Two hundred films among 2500 entries from 80 countries were chosen and Kaavalan found a place among them! Also, he signed on the dotted line to team up with big film makers, viz., Shankar, A. R. Murugadoss and Gautam Vasudev Menon. The films should roll out one after the other. The first will be Shankar's Nanban, a Pongal bonanza from Ilaiya Thalapathi. Vijay should be a happy man. “I am,” is his pithy reply.

Presently camping in Mumbai for Murugadoss' Thuppaaki, when I text him for a suitable time to talk, Vijay calls up right away! And for the first time in more than half-a-dozen face-to-face interactions and an equal number of telephone conversations I've had with the rather taciturn actor, I get glimpses of his sense of humour and wit. Though the opening refrain was the usual, “What-can-I-say-about-my-film”
line, a little prodding makes me realise that adverse comments about his pre-release exchanges early in his career have irked him no end. “I've had my share of brickbats and they've made me cautious. Frankly, my promises could appear tall. And after the release people could think the film didn't live up to the hype. So what's the point?” Yet in an industry where feverish ad campaigns and promos in every form are imperative, can he eschew them completely? “I can't. Have I not called you up? I know publicity is a must. Only that after a point I want my films to do the talking,” he demurs.

Standing ovation :

I temporarily shift focus to his visit to the 14 Shanghai International Film Festival as a guest of honour in June last, and the actor unwinds. It was the first time a Vijay film was screened at a film fest. “Rekhs, the co-ordinator for South Indian movies for international film fests, was instrumental in sending Kaavalan to Shanghai. She had done the subtitling too,” he informs. The experience must have been new to him. “Very, I was dressed appropriately in a three-piece suit for the occasion, but very tense. I sat with the audience, most of them Chinese, for some time. Then I decided to wait outside. I could make out that they were enjoying Kaavalan. Later when the film turned serious, there was silence. And I was overwhelmed by the standing ovation at the end. The reaction was very much similar to what I'd seen, say, at Sathyam Cinemas! As they came out, they congratulated me, sought my autograph and throughout the interaction addressed me as ‘Bhoominathan,' my name in the film! ‘Great job, Bhoomi,' they went on. That's when I realised language is no barrier to understanding emotions. And with the smattering of English I know, I responded,” laughs Vijay.

In all our conversations Vijay never fails to spell out his limitations as he sees them. “Come on, don't give me that line. Not wanting to converse in English is far different from not being able to,” I reply. He smiles.

Now I change tack to Nanban, his next. He's an ace dancer. Did Ileana, his heroine, find it tough to keep pace with him? “Her footwork is amazing. I was the one who had to watch out,” that's his modesty at work again!

Remakes aren't new to Vijay. He's done many, and successfully too. But Vijay replicating Aamir Khan is a surprise! “I had watched Three Idiots with my family at Mayajaal and enjoyed it to the hilt. But never did I think I would be part of its Tamil trip. When the offer came my way, I was sceptical and told director Shankar so. ‘This kind of film is new to me too. But I'm sure you'll be apt for the role,' he said.”

A dream come true :

“It was a great experience. Most of the shooting was at Dehradun and it was fun working with Srikanth and Jiiva.” Vijay had known Srikanth even earlier. “But I got to move with Jiiva only during Nanban, and we hit it off instantly.” Satyaraj dons the role that Boman Irani so effectively portrayed in Three Idiots. “Every hero here yearns to work with Satyaraj playing the anti. I'm glad Nanban fulfilled my desire,” he says.

Not only 2011, by the looks of it the year that's just dawned should be equally engaging for Vijay. Following Thuppakki should be Gautham Menon's action franchise, Yohan. “Let's save that for our chat later,” he laughs.

Though a remake, Shankar has vested Nanban with his typical touches. “The ‘Asku Laska' number is a situation you don't find in Hindi,” Vijay informs and suddenly remembers he doesn't wish to say much. “You make me divulge more than I intend to,” he laughs. “The audience should come to the film without any expectation. I don't wish to create any hype.” The catchy numbers of Nanban, courtesy Harris Jeyaraj, are chartbusters. This is his first score for a Vijay film. “But he's given the music for my ad campaigns,” says Vijay.

“Most of us have watched Three Idiots. Yet, thanks to Shankar, viewers should find Nanban fresh,” he pauses and adds with a chortle, “See, there I go again …”

NANBAN AND VETTAI WILL NOT BE OUT ON SAME DAY

Trade sources say that Nanban and Vettai may not release on the same day after all. There is a buzz that Nanban will hit the screens on January 12th and Vettai on January 14th. This means there would be a one day gap which is very important in the current scenario to rake up the collections at the box office.

Both Nanban and Vettai are the most expected films of the year. Nanban is directed by Shankar and has Vijay, Jiiva, Srikanth, Ileana and Sathyaraj in important roles while Vettai is directed by Lingusamy and has Arya, Madhavan, Sameera Reddy and Amala Paul.

“When I was shooting for Endhiran, I happened to see 3Idiots and liked the script so much that I filmed its remake in Tamil” said Shankar. The director added “Ilayathalapathy is one such actor after Rajinikanth, who will be on sets before the shoot starts and he is a complete professional.”

THE BEST MONTAGES OF 2011

Putting well composed songs into pictures and inserting them into movies is one of the most difficult things, especially when you don’t use fancy locations, costumes and dancers. Montages can be a challenge for the actors, directors and editors. Putting together a coherent montage which says things very essential to the story, establishing premises and taking things forward, all within a song, is an art unto itself. The practice of montages seems to be getting more and more popular these days with most directors preferring it to the traditional song-dance routine. So, here we are; the best montages of 2011.

Yaaradhu – Kaavalan
A cute romantic song; the hero’s search for his love through phone conversations. The song has been picturised in way that takes us through the slow growth of the involvement of Vijay’s character in the romance. But, it is not a mushy or sugary affair; it is laced with humour and that’s what makes this song special. There is absolutely nothing fancy. It’s all shot within the normal everyday surroundings of the characters, yet advances the story significantly and firmly establishes the nature of the relationship. It was nice to see Vijay in a breezy and romantic mood, without any heroic airs, after quite a long time.

WHY ILEANA DIDN'T ATTEND NANBAN AUDIO LAUNCH

While various theories are doing rounds about the absence of Ileana D' Cruz at the audio launch of 'Nanban' in Coimbatore last week, the actress's spokesperson has come out with an explanation that she was down with flu. "Ileana was shooting non-stop, especially at nights. Working without a break and climate change has resulted in her getting affected with flu. She was keen to go to Coimbatore for Nanban music release. But her health didn't permit her," the spokesperson says. "Only now Ileana is slowly recovering from the illness," the spokesperson says and adds: "She feels very bad about not taking part in the star-studded event. She had in fact planned everything related to her Coimbatore trip."

The audio launch of 'Nanban' was a grand affair last week, which was attended by the who is who of Kollywood. Directed by Shankar and produced by Gemini Film Circuit, the Tamil remake of '3 Idiots' has Vijay, Jiiva and Srikanth in lead roles. Music is by Harris Jayaraj.

ODE TO FRIENDSHIP

The audio launch of Nanban in Coimbatore was a night to remember. The event showcased the camaraderie between the various actors and technicians who were part of the film.
The event saw all the actors bond on stage as they shared their mutual admiration for each other. Ilayathalapathy Vijay, who called Shankar ‘India’s Spielberg’, mentioned how he always regretted the fact that he missed out on working in the director’s Muthalvan, which he was initially supposed to do.
The event saw all the stars of the film share their respect for Vijay’s punctuality and dedication. From Jiiva and Srikanth to S J Suryah and Sathyaraj, everyone was present at this do. But, one person, who was conspicuously absent, was Ileana D’Cruz, the leading lady of the film. While there were constant announcements through the course of the evening that she will drop by, much to the fans’ disappointment, she eventually didn’t turn up. The 3D audio launch saw some performances to songs from the film. Soon, it was the turn of Harris Jayaraj, music composer for the film, who took over the stage for his concert. Many singers from Kollywood sang his biggest hits over the years, giving the fans something to cherish forever.

NANBAN - "HEARTILEY BATTERY" SONG MAKING

NANBAN MAKING AN INTRO

VIJAY TO PRESIDE OVER ENGEYUM EPPOTHUM 100 DAYS

Gone are the times when films would celebrate their 25th week (silver jubilee) and 50th week (golden jubilee) at the box-office. In today’s highly commercialized world, it’s appreciated even if a film manages to enter its 2nd or 3rd week without being taken off from any of the cinema halls. Nowadays, a 25-day runs is considered a ‘silver jubilee’ and a 50-day run is treated as a ‘golden jubilee’!

Fox Star Studios and AR Murugadoss Productions’ maiden co-production “Engaeyum Eppodhum”, has successfully completed 100 days at the BO. The movie featuring Jai,Anjali,Ananya and Sharvanand in the lead, released on September 16th 2011 made its way to a total 150 halls in the state alone creating new records week-in and week-out. The dubbed Telugu version, Journey too was received well by the audience. Made on a budget of 5 crore, the film saw good return on investment grossing around 20 crore.

And, to celebrate its 100 days run, a huge function is being organized by AR Murugadoss, which will be presided over by Ilayathalapathy Vijay. It may be worth mentioning here that Vijay’s Thuppakki is being directed by AR Murugadoss.

AR Murugadoss says, “Engaeyum Eppodhum’s reception has proved that content is the hero ever, breaking stereotypical formulas and myths of ‘centre’ classification. I ‘d like to thank, Fox Star Studios, Dir. Saravanan and the entire team of Engeyum Eppodhum. Most importantly would like to thank the audience who encouraged this effort with their fullest support; This support and encouragement of audience for my 1st production venture have motivated me strongly to continue with such new ventures with new talents in the future”.

He adds, “I am looking for an apt time to hold a function and have Ilayathalapathy Vijay preside over. The entire cast and crew will be present on the occasion.”.

AFTER VIJAY, IT IS VIJAY : SHANKAR

The audio launch of Nanban took off at around 5 pm at the Hindustan College Grounds in Coimbatore yesterday. Vijay’s dad and director SA Chandrasekar released the audio which was received by Prabhu.
Vijay entertained the audiences by singing the Yedho Unnale song from the film. During this speech, he thanked director Shankar for giving him the opportunity to star in Nanban. Vijay added that he made several true friends during the making of Nanban and attributed this to the film’s title. The star was indicating that Jiiva, Srikanth, and others are his good friends and is happy to be associated with them. He was then honored with an enormous garland and a crown.
Shankar had an interesting episode to narrate about how he came to direct a remake. When Shankar was busy with Endhiran, the shooting was delayed one fine day. This earned him an opportunity to see 3 Idiots. As soon as he saw the film, Shankar said that he decided to go for a remake. That is how Nanban was born!
Praising Vijay, Shankar said that he is one actor after Rajinikanth to be present on the sets punctually. Shankar revealed that SJ Suryah lapped up the role in Nanban, something which he did not do even for Endhiran. That is how meaty his role is in Nanban, added Shankar.
Jiiva, Sathyaraj, Srikanth, SJ Suryah and others had good words to share about their co-stars.

MUSIC REVIEW : NANBAN

A year after the grandiloquent success of ‘Endhiran’, director Shankar comes up with a completely different film from his earlier magnum opus. As the director says, ‘it’s contrast to Endhiran. This will be a sang-froid entertainer offering breezy moments for everyone.’

The music was launched in style last evening at Coimbatore Harris Jayaraj concert and the songs have already become the favorite of Ilayathalapathy fans. Of course, for the first time the actor comes up with a rare combination of Shankar and Harris, which is sure to work at it best.

1. En Frienda Pola Yaaru Machan

Vocals:
Krish, Suchith Suresan

Lyrics:
Vivega

Few lines from the song were aired along with the first look teaser of the film. Of course, the very first set of lines leaves us enthralled. Obviously, it’s a time to celebrate as you’ll start dedicating this track to your friends, especially the ones you’re missing. Krish and Suchit Suresan form a right combination and rock to their best. But it’s the lyrics that bind us so much to it.

2. Askku Laska

Vocals:
Vijay Prakash, Chinmayi, Suvi (Rap)

Lyrics:
Madhan Karky

Madhan Karky has been experimenting with newfangled lyrics adding more languages. This song has a dozen of languages and is a captivating romantic number. Vijay Prakash intonates in a different style while Chinmayi brings forth a mellisonant feel with her vocalisms. Rap lines by Suvi are an additional attraction.

3. Endhan Kan Munney

Vocals:
Aalaap Raju

Lyrics:
Madhan Karky

The singer has already streaked chartbusters in combination with Harris Jayaraj that includes 2011’s best song ‘Ennamo Yedho’ from Ko. This song is completely the Harris way that goes blatant with the guitar works, the fill-ins and the style of instrumentals. It sounds like a background score when the hero falls in love at first sight with his sweetheart.

4. Heartiley Battery

Vocals:
Hemachandran, Mukesh

Lyrics:
Na. Muthukumar

‘All is well’ became the first stage of promotion of original version ’3 Idiots’. Now the makers of ‘Nanban’ want to retain the same factor here as well. The style of song reminiscences of the original one with Hemachandran and Mukesh giving their best. The interludes are played on trumpets with fast-paced percussions on accompaniments. The usage of terms of – Zero, Hero adds more intensity to the song.

5. Irukaana

Vocals:
Vijay Prakash, Javed Ali, Sunidhi Chauhan

Lyrics:
Pa. Vijay

Harris doesn’t give up his usual style of using some funny terms in the preludes and chorus as well. It’s a romantic duet that brings the rare combination of Vijay Prakash, Javed Ali and Sunidhi Chauhan. The song is sure to takes it leap by the time of release with the best dancers – Vijay and Ileana that goes with magniloquent picturing by Shankar.

6. Nalla Nanban

Vocals:
Ramakrishnan Moorthy

Lyrics:
Na. Muthukumar

Mark our words; the song will moisten your eyes and maybe few tears down the cheeks. It’s a wonderful song. It’s not just for your friends, but for your loved ones as well. Every line makes u feel from the bottom of heart. Ramakrishnan Moorthy had rendered the song with an excellent panache.

On the whole, ‘Nanban’ has three songs that strike spectacularly with its rich music and commendable lyrics. ‘En Frienda Pola’,’Nalla Nanban’ and ‘Askku Laska’ are the cherry-picks.

Verdict:
Good work by Harris.

Production:
Gemini Film Circuit

Direction:
Shankar

Star-casts:
Vijay, Jeeva, Ileana, Srikanth, Sathyaraj, Sathyan and others

Music:
Harris Jayaraj

Lyrics:
Madhan Karky, Kabilan, Pa. Vijay and Vivega

NANBAN SONGS ARE ROCKING

In appreciation of his protégé’s work, Ravikumar said, “This is a good movie with a well-written screenplay. I’m sure this film will be loved by Tamil audiences too. I will help Kumar if he remakes it.”

After assisting Ravikumar in a film like Varalaru, it felt great to have him watch my debut effort and hear praise from him,” said Kumar, who reveals that remaking this film in Tamil was an
idea that had always been on his mind.
When asked who he’d like to cast in Sudeep’s role for this film, Kumar says, “I think Vijay would do justice to the role. But Ravikumar says Karthi would be ideal. I’ll get a clear picture about who the lead actor will be by next fortnight.”

VIJAY SAYS 'FOLLOW YOUR DREAM'

The idiot factor: It was the last scene of the movie when it gets too emotional, and I was supposed to be happy for my friends. Jeeva said something so funny that I really couldn’t control my laughter for almost 20 minutes. The entire crew was waiting for me to finish.

Working with Shankar: I wanted to work with him for a very long time. He can also act well and has good timing. He is one of the best directors I have worked with.

Favourite sound: The Tamil version of ‘Zubi Dubi’, ‘Aska aska’, is my favourite song. I enjoyed shooting it. Incidentally, I’m hooked on to the ‘Kolaveri’ song.

Real life connect: My parents never wanted me to act. When I reached my 12th standard, I realized I had to act. I followed my dream, and that’s what the movie tells you to do.

Three’s company: I need to like the script to do any role. I really don’t mind working with Ajith or anyone else for that matter if I like the script.

Time out: I love playing games and sports like tennis and cricket with my kids. I also like animated movies. Last month, I took my son and his classmates out to watch ‘The Adventures of Tintin’.

Jeeva becomes Koji

The Idiot factor: I used to travel in buses without a ticket. Once, a conductor came to check my ticket, I jumped out and ran. My friend got caught and had to pay a huge fine. After all the drama, he caught up with me, slapped me hard, and scolded me in the choicest language. Also, when I became an actor, I used to use a lot of foul language on the sets and the director could actually hear me. It took me a while to realise this.

Working with Shankar: He has no airs and has been very encouraging, especially since my role is supposed to be comical. He constantly gave me instructions as to what I should do and all the instructions are given over the microphone. He calls me ‘Koji’ after the release of my movie ‘Ko’. So he would say, ‘Koji turn right’ or ‘turn left.’

Favourite sound: I love the music of the film, especially ‘En friend pola’.

Three’s company: I am open to experimentation. In fact, all my roles have been different till now.

Time out: I am a gadget freak. I have all the new gadgets in the market including my favourite, the PS3. I love playing cricket as well.

KERALA BOX-OFFICE, OCT 24 TO DEC 15

The Kerala box-office is back with tracking releases from Diwali till date. Tamil films dominated the box-office during this period due to a crippling three week strike when there were no Malayalam releases.
At number one is Vijay`s Velayudham which released on Diwali day in Kerala and took a fantastic opening. In the second position is Suriya`s 7aum Arivu which too released big and grossed huge.

Both the Tamil films cashed in as theatre owners gave them prime time shows and long run due to non-availability of Malayalam new releases. The buzz in trade circles is that Velayudham and 7aum Arivu may touch a distributor`s share of Rs2 Crores from Kerala.

In the third place is VK Prakash`s Beautiful starring Jai Surya and Anoop Menon which was released on December 2. The film is getting elite audiences and has netted nearly Rs 11 lakhs from Padma in Ernakulam in two weeks.

At number four is Jayaram`s Kamal directed Swapna Sanchari which is is an average gross.

VELAYUDHAM TURNS 50

Vijay's Deepavali gift to his fans 'Velayudham' has completed its 50-day run in the box-office. Claimed as one of the biggest hits of the Ilayathalapathy, the film is still running in a good number of cinema halls.

VIJAY'S YOHAN: ADHYAYAM ONDRU - THE DEVELOPMENTS

Gautham Menon’s production house Photon Kathaas Productions and Eros International Media Ltd will jointly produce the Vijay starrer Yohan:Adhyayam Ondru. It is an action thriller which will be shot mainly in UK, states a press note. Gautham intends to bring out a series of films with Yohan and this will be the starting point for it.
Mr. Sunil Lulla, Managing Director, Eros International Media Ltd said, “Eros continues to make advances in the regional film markets and we are happy to associate with PKP and further expand our south repertoire. Yohan: Adhyayam Ondru promises to be one of its kind action thrillers by the very talented Gautham Menon.”
Gautham Vasudev Menon said, “I am really looking forward to filming an all-out action film after Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu. Also interesting because I will be working with Vijay for the first time. Yohan will be made like an international film while still retaining all the elements, especially music, that makes Indian cinema work. A.R. Rahman has already composed a theme song for the film which is simply outstanding.  PKP (of which I am a part of) and I have found the ideal partners in Eros for a film on this scale, which needs to be produced and released on an international scale.”
Oscar award winner AR Rahman will be scoring the music for Yohan: Adhyayam Ondru. On his association with the project, he has said, “I am really excited working with Photon Kathaas and Eros on the movie Yohan. This is a completely new direction for both Gautham and me. We hope to come out with a product which is different yet rooted experience for the audiences.”
